a) Vous avez voté une loi . Elle est très utile .
b) La loi que vous avez votée est très utile .
Les énoncés a et b sont équivalents . La phrase b est composée d'une principale " la loi est très utile " , et d'une relative " que vous avez votée " . Le pronom relatif " que " reprend l'antécédent " la loi " ; il est complément d'objet de " avez votée " . Cette relative , indispensable au sens de la phrase , est dite définissante : elle définit " la loi " .
En anglais , on peut relier aussi deux phrases indépendantes avec un pronom relatif qui reprend un élément de la première phrase ( l'antécédent ) .
Ex : Tony Blair was leader of the Labour Party . He was elected in 1998 . →
Tony Blair , who was leader of the Labour Party , was elected in 1998 .
Tony Blair , qui était le chef du parti travailliste , a été élu en 1998 .
Comment choisir le relatif ?
En cours d'anglais en ligne, pour choisir le pronom relatif qui convient , il faut se demander :
- s'il est sujet ou complément ;
- s'il a comme antécédent un humain oui non - humain .

Non humain Which / that Which / that
Who / which / Φ ?
Who et which sont indispensables quand ils sont sujets de la relative .
Ex : Meghan , who is Irish , is my best friend . Méghan , qui est irlandaise , est ma meilleure amie . ( who étant sujet , est obligatoire . )
Who et which sont le plus souvent omis , surtout à l'oral , quand ils sont compléments .
Ex : Meghan is the girl we saw this morning . Méghan est la fille que nous avons vue ce matin
La forme whom , qui peut ne peut être que complément , est rare . On la trouve après une préposition .
Ex : The girl with whom I got out is Irish . La fille avec qui je sors est irlandaise .
Who / which ou that ?
Who et which sont indispensables pour introduire une proposition non définissante ( c'est - à - dire non indispensable et séparée de l'antécédent par une virgule ) .
Ex : The mayor of London , who is over there , is wearing a wig .
Le maire de Londres , qui est là - bas , porte une perruque .
( Le relatif est sujet , l'antécédent est un humain , la relative est non définissante ) .
Ex : This building , which is typical perpendicular style , is the Houses of Parliament .
Ce bâtiment , qui est typique du style perpendiculaire , est les Houses of Parliament .
That est préférable à who / which pour introduire les propositions définissantes , surtout après les expressions comme all , nothing , everything , the only , the first , les superlatifs , etc ...
Ex : The only thing that changes is .... La seule chose qui change , c'est ...

2) Dans les phrases suivantes , that peut - il être omis ?
a) The measures that last summer were very important .
b) The measures that they took last summer were very popular .
c) The first decision that they made was to ban smoking .
d) Have they voted the law is so controversial ?
e) Have you visited a place that you could recommend ?
3) Relier les phrases entre elles avec un pronom relatif .
a) The prime minister lives at 10 Downing street . The prime minister is the head of the government .
b) The Parliament is composed of two Houses . The Parliament is a legislative body .
c) The House of Commons consists of about 630 MPs ( Members of Parliament) . The MPs are elected .
d) Westminster is a palace where the two Houses meet . Westminster is situated by the River Thames .
e) Saint Paul's is London's cathedral . Saint Paul's built by Christopher Wren .
4) Faire correspondre les phrases a à d avec les phrases 1 à 4 et les relier par who ou which .
a) Do you know this MP ?
b) The police has found the man .
c) I have read an interesting article .
d) The prime minister has written a book .
1) He bombed the Houses of Parliament .

5 Traduire en français .
a) The British sovereign , who is a constitutional monarch , has no real power .
b) The prime minister has wide powers which include the appointment of ministers .
c) The House of Commons , which sits for about 160 days each year , works on public business .
d) The House of Lords , which consists of 1,200 members , can veto a decision of the Commons .
e) The speech the Queen reads to Parliament , has been written by the prime minister .
