The story is set on a plantation in Louisiana. Two families are involved : The Valmondés and the Aubignys. The main protagonist, Désirée, was found as she was but a toddler by Mr Valmondé. At the time, Mr and Mrs Valmondé were childless and therefore only too happy to adopt her.
As the story opens, Désirée is a twentyish young woman who has just married Armand Aubigny. The newly-weds are the proud parents of a baby boy son.
Armand who used to be quite harsh when dealing with the slaves, has changed a lot since being a dad. Indeed, he's much nicer and easier-going.
However, when the baby turns 3 months old, things start to change and Désirée feels quite at a loss as she fails to see what the problem is.
One day, as she's looking at the little quadroom boy who's close to her baby, she suddenly realizes that her baby is not white but has the same skin colour as the slave.
Armand who didn't care about Désirée's origins when they fell in love is now convinced his wife had slave ancestor and feels so ashamed that he no longer wants to see her or the baby. Désirée has no choice but to go back to her parents. A few weeks later, Armand is getting rid of all her belonging and there's a bonfire in the plantation. As he's on the point of destroying Desirée's love letters, he finds a letter by his own mother. She tells Armand's dad how happy and relieved she... [ … ]
